Welcome to DLG #6 The History of Educational Technology

Welcome once again! In this module, we’ll cover the History of Educational Technology. Why is this topic important? Just as with general history, studying events of the past provides us with ideas on how to better approach similar situations in the present and future. In the past, the extent of the impact of different technologies could not be known immediately.  However, following a number of years a technological innovation's full  impact on society can become evident.  Thus, the essence of this module is to have you appreciate past technological experiences in education to make better decisions about ET use in your own profession as this field evolves.

Objectives of DLG #6:

  • Illustrate the meaning of the “message” and the “medium” as introduced by McLuhan and interpreted by Federman.

  • Explore past technologies (media) and discuss their effects on culture and society (message).

  • Predict the potential effects of current and future technologies.

  • Discuss the predictions to gain more insight into these topics.
